Sasha Mashin: A Jazz Drummer's Journey

​

Born in 1976 in Saint Petersburg, Russia, Sasha Mashin's immersion in the world of jazz began at a young age. In 1991, he joined the renowned jazz club Kvadrat, a hub for the city's vibrant jazz scene, where he had the opportunity to connect with and learn from prominent Saint Petersburg jazz musicians.

After two months of studying at the Mussorgsky Music Academy, Mashin made a pivotal decision to pursue a professional career in music, leaving behind academia to fully embrace his artistic path. This marked the beginning of an illustrious journey that would take him to the pinnacle of the jazz world.

In 1998, Mashin relocated to Moscow, where he continued to collaborate with some of Russia's finest jazz artists, further honing his skills and expanding his musical horizons. His talent and dedication soon caught the attention of the international jazz community, leading to a remarkable opportunity in 2005.

Selected for the Open World Program USA, Mashin traveled to New York, where he immersed himself in the epicenter of American jazz. This transformative experience culminated in an unforgettable performance at the legendary Blue Note Jazz Club, sharing the stage with jazz icons Clark Terry, Kenny Barron, and Jimmy Heath.

From 2008 onwards, Mashin embarked on a worldwide musical odyssey with the Isfar Sarabski band, gracing stages across the globe and captivating audiences with his virtuosity and infectious energy.

Throughout his illustrious career, Mashin has had the privilege of collaborating with an extensive list of jazz luminaries, including Benny Golson, Clark Terry, Jimmy Heath, Kenny Barron, Johnny Griffin, Lew Tabackin, James Spaulding, Eddy Henderson, Steve Slagle, Gary Smulyan, Larry Schneider, Mark Turner, Donny McCaslin, Rosario Giuliani, Alex Sipiagin, Isfar Sarabski, Dhafer Youssef, and many others.

Since February 2022, Mashin has made Italy his new home, continuing to push the boundaries of jazz expression in collaborations with Alex Sipiagin, Isfar Sarabski, Rosario Giuliani, Luca Mannutza, Antonio Farao', Dado Moroni, and Rocco Zifarelli.
