Calibration of our tape recorders

Welcome, audiophiles and enthusiasts. We delve into the world of tape recorders and the intricate process of calibration. The precision equipment we use is crucial to achieving optimal audio quality from analogue recordings.

Through weekly checks and six-monthly maintenance, we carry out preventive maintenance on our recorders, prolonging their service life and guaranteeing impeccable sound at all times.

 

Calibration generally involves adjusting the following:
  Bias adjustment
  Azimuth alignment
  Speed calibration
  Level adjustment

We use the following equipment:

• HAWLETT PACKARD 34401A Precision microvoltmeters with 1 ppm resolution and 0.300khz bandwidth

• HAWLETT PACKARD 3314A   Frequency generator and synthesiser from thousandths of hertz to 20mega

• TEKTRONIX 784D Real-time spectrum oscilloscope-analyser with 1gh analogue bandwidth

• BRUEL & KJAER 2636 Measuring amplifier and voltmeter

• PHILIPS PM8141 X-Y recorder (plotter for graphical display on paper of Spectral Analysis - Frequency Response Measurement - Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) Analysis - Noise Level Measurement - Phase Analysis)
